WHO Issues Concern Over Severe Lack of Weight-Loss Jabs

Under 10% of individuals who could benefit from GLP-1 drugs including Wegovy are able to get them, states the global health agency as it issues its inaugural recommendations on the drugs.

Considering over a billion people worldwide now living with obesity, it is urging more widespread and fairer access to these injectable treatments.

Based on projections, in excess of 2,000,000,000 could be living with obesity by 2030 unless action is taken.

"The latest guidance acknowledges that excess weight is a lifelong illness that can be managed with comprehensive and ongoing support," remarked its chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

High costs, constrained manufacturing, and supply-chain constraints are major obstacles to widespread access to the jabs that can help people shift considerable body mass, says the body.

GLP-1 Therapy Shortage

Despite the present most optimistic outlook, the production of such drugs might only reach around 100 million people – fewer than 10% of eligible patients, as stated by the health organization.

The recommendation calls on countries and companies to increase access, through approaches such as voluntary licensing.

Exclusive production rights on semaglutide – the core ingredient of a leading brand – is set to lapse in several nations in 2026.

The Way Obesity Drugs Function

These medications imitate a natural hormone to slow digestion, reduce hunger and enhance satiety so users eat less.

Individuals typically begin shedding pounds after several weeks of commencing the weekly injections.

Research suggests patients may put most of the weight back on after a year of halting the drug, when their usual appetite resume.

Being above a healthy weight elevates your risk for contracting medical conditions, like diabetes, cardiovascular issues, brain attack, and certain malignancies.

Excess weight impacts people in countries worldwide and was linked to over three and a half million deaths worldwide in 2024, according to the health agency.
