The Trump phenomenon's most revealing and distinctive instances – not its most significant, nor most brutal, nor most dangerous, nor most senseless, but potentially its most enlightening – emerged earlier this harvest season. Over the span of a few weeks, the nation's leader started showing everyone his plans for an ornate dance hall two times larger compared to the White House and then began solo dismantling the East Wing to erect it.
He has done things countless times more severe – the present calculation of casualties resulting from his reductions to foreign assistance amounts to 600,000 and increasing, and recently an analysis projected his energy policies would result in fatalities 1.3 million more. Yet nothing as characteristic. No other president would have risked – genuinely, no previous leader would have contemplated – unilaterally destroying significant portions of the executive mansion in order to erect a Versailles-style party room, with the active collaboration of multiple America's wealthiest, nearly all of which have business with federal agencies.

As confusing as it is to witness the president seek to颠覆 the established notion of democracy and substitute it with its direct contrary, there is one large group within America who wouldn't consider it totally unfamiliar. This includes individuals like us – among senior generations a near majority – who were educated within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have witnessed across decades while conservative evangelical congregations converted the Savior we were raised with into the total contrary of who we understood him to be. At its most basic, they turned a figure of compassion into a symbol of animosity who endorses exactly the harshness that he condemned in the Gospel; this change developed more gradually, across decades as opposed to months, but it is nonetheless disturbing through similar means, a confusing personal impact for countless people.
A Damaging Christianity Takes Hold
Therefore allow me to outline the Savior from my childhood, because theoretically Christ is the focus of any Christian faith, and since the fastest-growing cadre among Americans could have minimal awareness regarding him because they identify as non-believers or doubters or nones. I have no problem with any of these traditions, nor with different religions; yet I maintain that there are pearls of great price in biblical accounts.
It is decidedly not the story of an authoritative monarch appearing; conversely, a baby is born to homeless parents in a storage space, who are forced to hastily depart to another nation to avoid secret police. The child matures in simple surroundings, an employed craftsman; his message focuses on affection for others, specifically for the disadvantaged – and not a sentimental love, but tangible care, demonstrated through nourishing and protecting. Christ's response to hostility is to turn the opposite cheek – not as a gesture of compliant endurance, but as a way to teach the aggressor; his crime policy states that when a person pilfers your jacket you should give them your pullover as well.
The evident and straightforward reality that the Savior from scripture advocates for a type of extreme compassion centered on the poor is what has always made Christian religion somewhat of a provocative belief system: attractive to the general public, but because of its intrinsic extremism needing to be contained. In the fifties it was controlled through watering down – Protestant Christianity was so prevalent that it practically baptized the status quo.
A Struggle for the Finest of Us
Therefore I have felt encouraged to observe the steadfast resistance to Trump develop over the last twelve months. It has provided substantial consolation to participate in developing the campaign that has taken to the streets in rally after rally, and appears to have motivated citizens to turn out in numbers in interim political contests. We must have to persist with it, and with identical determination, displaying national flags at every demonstration and calls to the best parts within national heritage.
