Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments from captain Ben Stokes about the dressing room not being "weak men".

Stokes made those words in several conversations in the wake of his team's loss in the second Ashes versus Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

But, after the opener made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to England suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently went on a break to Noosa between the second and third matches.

Prior to this match, he revealed his team had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay alive in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from Stokes and head coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we could do something special going into this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional target of 435.

This means, the home team require just four more wickets on the final day to secure an unassailable 3-0 lead after three matches played.

Defeat will extend the English team's drought in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in only 11 days of cricket – after England fell the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," said the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a very, very good team. It was always going to be tough touring here to face them. They were the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

Although Crawley's performance in the third Test probably answers doubts about his short-term future in the side, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in the team's second innings on day four, extending his modest returns versus the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

However, Crawley insisted any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is noise externally. There's no chat like that on Ollie amongst the players," he finished.
